Fixtures 2009-10

World Youth Olympics

Singapore

Mark English (Letterkenny AC ) finished 8th in the1.000 meters final at the World Youth Olympics in Singapore. Held in very warm conditions of 35 degrees, the  early pace was set by the Sudanese athlete who went through 400 meters in 53.70, English had to run very wide to move through the field as they approached the bell and made up a gap of 8-10m to the leaders with 300m to go as he sat on the shoulder of the leader. As the Ethiopian Geleto made his decisive move for home with 200m remaining he split the field apart, English was unable to maintain contact. Geleto maintained his form to the finish and took gold in an impressive 2.19.94 with silver going to the fast finishing Driouch of Qatar 2.21.25 and Briton Charlie Grice got up for bronze in 2.21.85. Mark finished eighth in a time of 2.24.95, just outside his best of 2:24.53, but will probably disappointed but he will surely have benefited from competing in a world final and after an excellent year will hopefully be able to move on and carry the form he has shown into the Junior ranks in the years ahead.

Update: Mark English made it safely through to the Final of the 1000m earlier this morning.

Running in heat two the Letterkenny athlete who had won his Youth Olympic trial race in Moscow in May with a time of 2:24.53 took the race up from the gun leading the field through intermediate time’s of 58.74 at 400 meters and 1.57.54 at 800 meters to finish 4th in 2.25.39. This seen him 6th fastest from the two heats with 12 fastest to qualify forward to Sunday's Final. the final is down for decision at 10.20 local time 3.20am Irish time.

Good luck to Letterkenny's Mark English who having won the European qualifiers earlier this year will compete against the best the world has to offer on Tuesday morning in the heats of the 1000m. These heats are scheduled for 02.10 Irish Time.

Ulster & Northern Ireland Senior Track & Field Championships

Saturday 13th June

Jason Smyth's 10.32 performance in the final of the 100m was the main headline from 2010 Provincial Championships which this year doubled as trials for  the Commonwealth Games in India later this year. The City of Derry athlete who just few weeks ago won the Paralympics World Cup in Manchester, was in blistering form and it had been predicted that if conditions were right the Spartans athlete could erase Paul Brizzell's figures of 10.35. As it turned out the Eglinton flyer did just that and after hinted that there may still be more to come this season. Elsewhere two young ladies namely Katie Kirk and Ciara Mageean once again were in very good form. Fresh from their record breaking exploits at the Irish Schools Championships last weekend both once again recorded impressive victories, Kirk setting yet another pb over 400m to take her first Senior title in 55.06, while Mageean clocked 4:20.96 to win the 1500m in comfortable fashion.

Woodies Irish Schools T & F Championships

Tullamore Harriers Stadiun

Saturday 5th June

Well where does one start. Mageean, Mills, Kirk, Inter Boys 1500. Well gotta begin somewhere amongst the many excellent performances from Ulster athletes at these championships which were held in superb weather. Ciara Mageean once again entralled the crowd with a solo gun to tape victory in her final schools event, breaking the 21 year old record which stood to Sinead Delahunty at 4:30.27 by 11 seconds, and in doing so retained the Lar Byrne Trophy for the Performance of the Championships.  Joanna Mills on back of her win over 400m at the European Clubs last weekend as a guest on the Tir Chonaill team was again in sparkling form. The Ballyclare High athlete won over the quarter mile again in 55.69 having been pushed most of the way by Clare Mooney, she had earlier won the Long Jump with a best effort of 5.99m and in the penultimate event of the day the Senior Girls 4 x 100 helped he team to Gold and her third of the Championships with a storming second leg. Broke Joanna Mills 300m Ulster Schools record in the heats, then beat her new figures in the Final fast forward two weeks, having earlier this week been selected on the Irish Senior 4 X 4 Squad for the European Cup, Sullivan Upper's Katie Kirk blows Mills Irish Schools figures of 39.19 out of the water as she storms to victory in the Inter 300m in a time of 38.65. Afterwards as I passed comment to her that she was lucky that conditions were still for her race (as the wind got up as the Senior 400 Girls went to blocks) she said that there was a strange wind out there as the was breeze in the face both in the back and home straights. Once again the Inter Boys 1500 lived up to it's billing as possibly been race of the championships. Ingram, Finnegan Monaghan, Fitzsimons, Tobin all in contention with 800 to go, Finnegan on the front cranks it up and slowly but surely its down to a re run of the Ulster's at the bell it Finnegan from Ingram, this time the St Eunan's athlete is pushing the issue at the front but the Hazelwood athlete hangs in there as they enter the home straight, Ingram comes wide and inch's in front he open's out and develops a 2-3m lead which he holds at the finish, another great race from these two, and Patrick Monaghan makes to a complete Ulster podium as he finishes third. There was another all Ulster battle two races previous as Tom Magee of Glengormley High just got up on the line to pip a brave Mark Mc Guinness of St Catherine's Killybegs 4:20.10 to 4:20.24, with Cross and Passion's Conor Christie in third. Donegal had earlier taken a title in the middle distance as first year Intermediate Karl Griffin of Abbey Vocational, Donegal Town broke his pb by over 5 seconds to win the 800m in a very impressive 1:54.48.

There were a host of other title winners, having won the European Youth Trials in Moscow a fortnight earlier St Eunan's Mark English easily won the Senior 800m, while another James Treanor of St Macartan's who also competed in Moscow also recorded a easy victory in the 3k Walk, while St Michaels Ciaran Dolan edged proceedings in the Senior Boys Long Jump, as his best of 6.85 was just 1cm ahead of Kings Hospital's E Fahy. In the Senior Girls category there was a provincial double in the hurdles, with Aimee Mc Neilly winning the sprint hurdles while earlier in the day Christine Mc Mahon won the 400m Hurdles in 61.26.Hannah Todd rounded off a fine day for Ulster athletes in this age group when she took the Triple Jump Gold. In the Intermediate section there were wins for Ryan Mc Parland in the short hurdles while Dromore High School athlete Matthew Martin won the Javelin. Lucy Dugan led a Ulster top 3 as she was in record winning form, 2.90m in the Inter Pole Vault. Clare Dougherty of Lumen Christi, Derry repeated the double she recorded at Ulster level by taking gold in the Junior High Jump and Triple Jump. There was more success in the Junior Boys where Andrew Creamer of St Pats Cavan took Gold in the 80m Hurdles, Josh Bingham took the Pole Vault title with a clearance of 3m, while R.B.A.I took top honours in the Relay.

Apart from the titles won above there were many other fine performances from Ulster athletes at one of the best day's athletics in the country.

Congratulations must also go to Leterkenny's Darren Mc Brearty who got the qualification time for 1500m for the World Junior Championships  in Canada in a very high quality IMC Race held as part of the Schools programme. Finn Valley's Noel Collins and Letterkenny's Patrick Brennan also recorded massive personal bests in this race.

European Clubs Championships

Berne, Switzerland

Sunday 30th May

Having won last year's National Club League Tir Chonaill A.C. this year travelled to Berne in Switzerland to represent Ireland in the First Division of the European Clubs Cup. Competing against teams who had seasoned International athletes within their ranks while the Donegal Squad was a relatively young side. There were a number of fine performances on the day with the performance of the day coming from guest athlete Joanna Mills who won her 400m in 55.93. Overall a good day's competition played out in wettest cool conditions the Donegal team finished a very creditable equal fifth. Well done to all concerned and now the focus will turn to trying to retain their National title in August.

European Youth Olympic Trials

Moscow

May 21-23

Update: Congratulations to Mark English of Letterkenny A.C. who won the 1000m at this event which serves as a trial/qualifier for the World Youth Olympics in Singapore from 14-26 August. The race seemed to be quite tactical with English tracking the British athlete Grice and with just under 200m to go made his decisive move to take the win.

Shercock's James Treanor was first to compete and finished a very credible 12th in the 10k Walk in a time of 46.22.70 in very hot conditions. Friday evening's session  seen Ciara Dullaghan of Lagan Valley finish 7th in her heat of the 1000m in a p.b.of 2.51.54 and while disappointed herself that she didn't qualify for the final can be well pleased with her first performance in an Irish vest.  Mark English had a fantastic run in the 1000m winning his heat in 2.28.11 controlling the race from the start and the Letterkenny athlete is looking forward with confidence to his final on Sunday. Dempsey Mc Guigan of Finn Valley who looked very good in the warm up for the Hammer with huge throws over 60m unfortunately had two fouls in the competition and one throw 10m below his best.

UK Sportshall Finals

NEC, Birmingham

Sunday 18 April

Down through the years teams from the province have travelled across the Irish Sea and done extremely well in this event. This year was no exception as teams from Donegal Girls U13, U15 & Boys U13 along with a Boys U15 team from Co. Derry acquitted themselves very well. Athletes in the Girls U13 team took home a number of medals. Following their Gold Medal winning performance in Nenagh the Tir Chonaill girls were on the medal trial again. Kelly Mc Grory shared  the Gold medal in the 6 lap Time Trial as she along with Katie Grinyear of Avon both clocked 1:18.7. Mc Grory was again amongst the medals in the High Jump where 4 athletes cleared 1.45m with the Donegal lass only missing out on Gold on countback. The sprinters were in real form, as Emma Brady and Kate Mc Gowan filled two of the podium positions when taking Silver and bronze in the 2 Lap Final. Later in the day the 4 x 2 Lap quartet romped home to a comfortable victory with over 2 seconds to spare over nearest rivals West Yorkshire. Also medalling in the 4 x 2 lap relay were the Girls U15 team as they took Bronze behind the Birmingham and Hampshire teams. Well done to all the athletes who competed and to the team management who prepared the athletes for this event.

AAI Juvenile Indoor Championships

Weekend 2

10/11 April

Nenagh Olympic Indoor Arena

The finale to a busy indoor season was a fitting one as most of the leading up and coming young athletes in the country provided those present with some excellent performances, with many of the Ulster athletes in amongst it all. The highlight from Saturday's programme where the provinces athletes brought back a number of titles and medals was the championship best performance of Karl Griffin of  in winning the B U16 800m.  From the gun the Tir Chonaill athlete seemed to almost effortlessly churn out consistent splits to set new figures of 1:59.45. There were other Gold medal performances also for Alicia Boylan of Oriel in the G U16 Walk, Damien Mc Aree Glaslough Harriers B U17 Walk, Mark Mc Garvey City of Derry Spartans B U17 Long Jump, Emma Doherty North Belfast Harriers in the G U18 Walk, Ciaran Dolan St Michaels Enniskillen in the B U18 Long Jump, Darragh O Donnell Sliabh Liag in the B U18 High Jump, and Andrew Doyle of Mid Ulster in the Boys U 18 Shot Putt. There was another rush of medals from the relays on Sunday with Letterkenny, Tir Chonaill and Ballymena & Antrim teams taking home titles. A number of athletes and teams also took Silver and Bronze medals over the course of the weekend. Congratulations to them all and indeed to all the athletes from the province who competed over the two weekends. Many athletes had positive performances and they now head back to their clubs for another block of training in preparation for another busy outdoor season.

 Schools International Cross Country

Truro, Cornwall

Saturday 27th March

Truro, Cornwall was the venue on Saturday for the Aviva Schools International Cross Country. On a demanding course set up around the playing pitches at Truro School, Ulster athlete contributed to the Irish Schools teams that took medals in each of the races, in an event totally dominated by the English. In the first race of the four race programme the Junior Girls race Mount Lourdes athlete Sarah Jane Flanagan finished 22nd and final Irish scorer with the team taking Bronze behind England and Scotland. There was also team Bronze for the Junior Boys team with Conor Christie of Cross & Passion the number two Irish runner in 11th, an excellent run. Another excellent performance came from Banbridge High athlete Emma Mitchell, she was the only athlete to it put it up to the totally dominant English squad in the Inter Girls race. Getting up to sixth on the final lap Emma fought bravely but in the end could not prevent a clean sweep as she placed 9th at the finish. Laura Casey of St Michael’s Lurgan, finished 26th in this race as the Girls took Silver team medals. Andrew Monaghan of St Colmans, Newry finished 13th and lead Ulster runner in the Inter Boys race. Andrew ran very bravely as he ran with the lead group for much of the race only fading back on the final lap. Also contributing to the Silver medal winning Irish team was St Michael’s, Enniskillen athlete Finn Corrigan who ran a controlled race throughout which eventually seen him finish 16th. The second of the Monaghan twins Patrick finished 30th in this race. Once again it is great to see our athletes contribute so much to the success of the national team on the International stage.

Individual medals for Dullaghan & Murray  as North take Team Silver

Continental type conditions greeted the athletes for the National Inter Clubs Cross Country in the Phoenix Park yesterday, where athletes from Ulster were once again amongst the medals. In the Senior Men's race over 12k St Malachy's Gary Murray was considered to be one of the main contenders, but a head cold in the days before the race scuppered his chances of having a real go at challenging top man Mark Kenneally for the National title. Kenneally ment business as he opened up a gap early one that the Clonliffe athlete never look like relinquishing as the race progressed went further away to take his first national title convincingly. The real battle throughout was for the Silver & Bronze as Murray ran shoulder to shoulder with Gary Thornton for much of the race only for the Galway man to break away in the closing kilometers. In the Senior Women's race a fine team effort by North Belfast seen them take the Silver medals behind DSD The team of  Breege Connolly 8th, Sharon Bird 9th, Margaret Mary Meade 11th and Cathy Mc Court 26th finished only four points behind the Gold Medalists. Finn Valley's Teresa Mc Gloin a consistent performer on the Country was the top provincial finisher in 7th position. In the first race of the day the Junior Women's 6k, the little known Ciara Dullaghan of Lagan Valley took the Silver medal, while Cian O Reilly of Annalee was the top finisher from a local point of view in the Junior Men's race.

Weekend Round up

Another busy one on the competitive scene with the performance of the weekend from a provincial point of view coming from Letterkenny's Mark English. 16 year old English having took bronze in National Senior Championships a fortnight ago stepped up onto another level as he won the Junior race in the Celtic Cup in Cardiff in a superb 1:50.67 which is inside the qualifying time of 1:51.00 for the World Junior's in Canada later in the year. There were also wins in Cardiff for Jo Patterson of Ballymena & Antrim who took the 400m in 55.22 while Kerry Harty (Newcastle) won the 1500 in 4:26.77 & for Tir Chonaill's Mary Mc Loone who won the Triple Jump with a best of 11.94m, Mc Loone also finished second in the Long Jump. Of the other Ulster athletes Jason Harvey of Lagan Valley  49.82 over 400m  seen him finish in second place, while Andrew Doyle (Mid Ulster) 14.26m in the Shot, Katie Kirk (Lagan Valley) 2:17.08 in the 800m, Darren Mc Brearty (Letterkenny) 1:51.65 and Dean Adams (Ballymena & Antrim) 6.95 secs in the 60m all had third place finishes. Clare Wilkinson's best clearance of 3.76m seen her finish 4th in the Pole Vault.

At the same venue local athletes were also in action in the Celtic Schools International. Karl Griffin of Tir Chonaill who has already went sub two minutes over 800m this season had a comfortable victory in the event in 2:03.38. City of Derry's Mark Mc Garvey recorded two second place finishes in the 60m Hurdles in 8.75 and in the Long Jump with a best of 5.82m. St Michael's Enniskillen athlete Niall Mc Geever also had a busy day finishing 7th in the 60m in 7.62 while running 24.24 to finish 2nd in Race 2 of the 200m. The three afore mentioned athletes also helped the 4 x 200m Relay to third place in a very tight finish.

Moving to Cross Country where there were a number of excellent results at the Intermediate and Master AAI CC Championships held at Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle in Co. Roscommon. Letterkenny's Ciaran Doherty ran exceptionally well to finish 2nd to former Senior International athlete Peter Matthews in the Men's Masters race, while there were team titles for City of Derry who won the Intermediate Men's with 23pts, ahead of Dublin clubs Clonliffe Harriers 30 pts and Donore Harriers on 50pts, while in the Masters Women's North Belfast took the title ahead of Sportsworld  and Eagle AC. Earlier in the day there were podium finishes for Aoife Flanagan (Clones AC) in the G U11 and for Lucy Backus (Cranford) in the G U17 Race in the AAI B Juvenile Cross Country Championships.

Celtic Cup

Updated

Ulster are well represented on the Athletics Ireland teams that will travel to this weekend's Celtic Indoor Cup in Cardiff. Ballymena & Antrim's Dean Adams has been in superb form of late as last weekend he backed up his Silver medal at the National Senior Championships with the 60m title at the Irish Universities Indoor's. He is joined by club mates Jo Patterson and Claire Wilkinson both of whom won their respective events at the National Senior Championships. Donegal are well represented with Tir Chonaill's Mary Mc Loone looking to bounce back from what for her was two disappointing performances at the AAA's Championships in Sheffield as she competes in both the Long & Triple Jump. Letterkenny's Junior Middle Distance duo of Mark English & Darren Mc Brearty hope to build on the impressive form as they compete over 800m in Junior & Senior competitions. Andrew Doyle of Mid Ulster will be looking to improve on the 13.95m that seen him take the National Junior Shot Putt title last month while Katie Kirk of Lagan Valley will be looking to show form as she hopefully builds towards the European Youth Olympic Trials in Moscow during the summer. Since the teams were initially announced two more athletes from the province have been added to the squad with Jason Harvey going in the Junior 400m and Newcastle's Kerry Harty competing in the 1500m. Harvey who had a great Senior Championships will use this race as another opportunity to sharpen up his flat speed with the possible view to having a full season over 400m Hurdles. Harty mean while will have her eye firmly set on making the Northern Ireland team for this year's Commonwealth Games and races like these will help to keep sharp as she will be looking to get the standard over 3k.

AAI Juvenile Even Age CC & National Inter Counties

Sunday 22nd November

Kilbeggan Racecourse

In spite of the atrocious weather in recent days underfoot conditions were for the best part were very good. The Gale force winds along with the squally showers especially during the juvenile programme made for very tough cross country conditions. The very large crowd witnessed some excellent races and there were some terrific performances from the Ulster athletes amongst these.

In the lead up to this event which for the Senior and Junior athletes were the trials for the Euro Cross in Dublin in December the whole talk was who was going to win the various titles. One young man who surprised everyone including himself and his dad Paddy was St Malachy's Michael Mc Killop. Mc Killop was a commanding winner of the Junior Mens race. The race itself went off at frantic pace more like a 1k time trial than a 6k test of Cross Country endurance. As the laps passed the lead group got whittled down and as lead group went out on their last lap Michael started to ask the questions of his rivals by uping the tempo and slowly but surely opened up what was to be a commanding lead which he held to the end to take his first National title ahead of Liam Tremble from Dublin with Cork's Ryan Creech in third. This race also seen a great return to form for Noel Collins. The Omagh athlete ran well to finish fifth and he along with Finn Valleys Ian Ward who finished 6th just ahead of Annalee's Cian O Reilly will have to wait and see do they get the nod from the selectors when the pick the teams for the Euro's later on today.

Pre race favourite Ciara Mageean was a very convincing winner of the Junior Women's. After a fairly conservative start the City of Lisburn athlete eased away from her opposition to take the title. 16 year old Banbrige athlete Emma Mitchell has been making very steady progress over this past year, but third position and a place on the team surely surpassed her wildest dreams. Ballymena & Antrim's Eimear Black also put her name in the pot for selection as she finished 5th.

In the Juvenile Even Age Group Championships which preceeded the Inter Counties, there were excellent victories for Conor Christie of Springwell who took the U14 title while East Down’s Elaine Burch won a very competitive Girls U16 race. Shercock's Catherina Mullen had another excellent run on the national stage as she finished a close second in the G U18 race. Young Oisin Toal of Letterkenny AC was a Bonze medallist in the Boys U12 1000m. There was team success in the Girls U16 age group where Lagan Valley took Gold while in the Boys U12 age group Donegal took Gold and Finn Valley took club Bronze medals.

The Cross Country season for the juveniles now moves to the University of Ulster Coleraine in a fortnight's time where there are sure to be many more intriguing races.

AAI Juvenile Even Age CC & National Inter Counties

Sunday 22nd November

Kilbeggan Racecourse

Many of Ireland’s top cross country runners will be in action on Sunday at the Woodie’s DIY Inter County Cross Country Championships looking to secure their place on the Irish team for the European Cross Country Championships.

Irish team hopefuls will take to the course on Kilbeggan Race Course in Westmeath knowing that a top three position will guarantee them a place on the Irish squad for the European Cross Country, which takes place in Santry Park, Dublin on December 13th.

The Irish management will be in attendance at Kilbeggan on Sunday and Team Manager, Anne Keenan-Buckley, is looking forward to the races on Sunday.  “This weekend we will get an opportunity to see how our runners perform in a pressure situation. With some of the age groups we will have a good idea who will be in the squad but in something like the Junior Men’s race there are 9 or 10 athletes who could make the team,” Keenan-Buckley said.

The weather conditions in Westmeath could also have a big impact on Sunday’s races but Keenan Buckley believes that should not affect the athletes too much. “Good athletes should be able to compete on any course and run well. This is the first time we have held a championship here but it will be the same for everyone and I would imagine the course will be quite heavy considering the amount of rain that has fallen.”

The Team Manager thinks it could be a good indicator of the Santry Park course.  “Santry, if dry can be a very fast course, but if it is as wet as it has been then it could be a mudbath, so we may see something similar on Sunday.”

Several of Ireland’s top athletes, such as Martin Fagan, Mark Christie and Alistair Cragg won’t be in action in Kilbeggan for different reasons but may still be a key part of the Irish team for Santry.
However one athlete that will be in action on Sunday and will carry Irish hopes in Santry is Mary Cullen.  The North Sligo AC athlete has been in excellent form and will hope to continue this at Kilbeggan.

Mary has been very impressive recently and been showing some great form. The fact that she has stayed at home instead of returning to the US has been of great benefit to her. She was in Spain recently in what was a world class field where she finished fourth and was the second European. Even her road race times have been excellent and I think she even be in better shape than she was last year so everyone will be watching Mary on Sunday,” Keenan-Buckley said.

The Woodie’s DIY Inter County Cross Country Championships will take place in Kilbeggan Race Course, Westmeath on Sunday 22nd November.

The SPAR European Cross Country Championships will take place in Ireland for the first time on the 13th December in Santry Demesne, Dublin. For more information and regular updates on the event and to sign up to the mailing list for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships then log on to www.Dublin2009.ie.

Dublin 2009 has teamed up with racepix.com/euroxc , to keep a photo diary of the events leading up to the SPAR European Cross Country Championships.  All the photos of events leading to Santry can be viewed on the new page including this weekend’s European Cross Country trials at the Woodie’s DIY Inter County Cross Country Championships in Kilbeggan.

Athletics Ireland is supported nationally in running this event by the Irish Sports Council, Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, RTÉ, Failte Ireland and Clonliffe Harriers.

Don’t forget to avail of the special rate available for all members of Athletics Ireland. There is a half price adult rate available of €10 (full price is €20) and all Juvenile members go FREE! Please note the adult special offer ends Monday the 7th of December  If you would like to avail of this adult special price please log onto:
Ticketmaster

The will be a number of Ulster of athletes in the mix for these places, Ciara Mageean, Eimear Black, Emma Mitchell, Rachel Campbell, Joanne Mills and Catherina Mulle  in the Junior Womens, Ian Ward, Darren Mc Brearty, James O'Hare, Ryan McDermott, Michael McKillop and Cian O Reilly in the Junior Men. Also Maria Mc Cambridge will be looking to secure a place on the Senior Women's team.

All is to played for, and the conditions underfoot will have dashed the hopes of some and enhanced others but one position I would not like to be in is the selectors seat on Sunday evening.

A top class juvenile programme proceeds the Inter County races, where once again Ulster athletes will be in with a good shout of the medals. Action gets underway at Noon.

Please Note: Leave plenty of extra time to get to the venue from where ever you are travelling as the inclement weather and left roads impassable and you may need to take detours. Please drive with care.

AAI Senior Track & Field League Final

Tullamore Harriers Stadium

             August 8th

Congratulations to the athletes and management of Tir Chonaill and City of Derry who won their respective divisions at the AAI National League Final held in excellent conditions at the Tullamore Harriers Stadium. Defending Womens Premier Division Champions Tir Chonaill knew they had a fight on their hands, with fellow Ulster club Ballymena & Antrim and Munster outfits Ferrybank and Bandon all likely to feature very strongly. Throughout the day Tir Chonaill were always in a good position, with excellent doubles for Mary Mc Loone in the 400m & Long Jump and a middle distance double for Michelle Harvey. Teresa Mc Gloin also took maximum points in a tight finish to the 3000m as did Geraldine Stewart in convincing fashion in the Shot.. In all this was an excellent team effort where every point counted, as it turned out that the Donegal team had a single point to spare at the end over Ferrybank with Ballymena & Antrim in 3rd.

In the Men's 1st Division the honours went to the North West and the City of Derry club who had a very convincing victory. Their win was spearheaded by National Champions Jason Smyth and Tom Carey who both recorded doubles, Smyth winning the 1 & 2, while Carey won both the sprint and long hurdles. Adam Mc Mullan (Long Jump), Simon Herron (High Jump) and  Colm Craig (Pole Vault) also all took maximum points which helped their side to a seven and a half point victory ahead of Athletics Kerry.

This annual competition where U16 & U18 athletes from Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Ulster compete over a range of events this year took place in Carmathen, Wales. Ulster athletes once again excelled with seven individual victories, Seven personal bests and two Celtic Games records been recorded.

Mid Ulster athlete Andrew Doyle had a very busy day competing in three throwing events, In his favoured event the Hammer he set a new Celtic Games record of 61.77  in the third round of the competition to erase the old figures of Scotland's Chris Bennett set in 2006. In the Shot Doyle with his final effort of 15.99m set a new personal best which comfortably won the event. In the U18 800m Mark English continued his excellent form of late as he took maximum points for the team and in doing so broke Jams Nolan's Celtic Games record set back in 1994, the Letterkenny man's new figures are 1:53.07. St Michael's Ciaran Dolan bounced back from his disappointment at the European Youth Olympics by getting close to his pb as his best effort of 6.94 gained full points for the team in the U18 Long Jump.  In the Girls U18 3000m Joanne Mills of Lagan Valley ran very well to take victory in a new personal best of 10:03.7. In the Boys U16 age group Ulster athletes took maximum points in both the 800m and Javelin. Karl Griffin of Tir Chonaill who is only in the sport just over five months has now brought his pb down to 2:00.97 as he beat Ireland's Shame Fitzsimons into second place in an exciting finish to this event.
